Good Piece on Health Care and Abortion and Stupak by Michael Moore
at the Huffington Post

Money quote (anyone but me wonder if that expression is a variation on "money shot"):

"If the statistics show that countries with government-provided universal health care and nearly-free abortions are, in fact, the countries with the fewest abortions, then why on earth wouldn't the Right be the first in line to support universal health care?

Because it isn't about 'universal health care.' It's about controlling women, period. It's about sticking your nose in other people's business. It's about pushing your religious beliefs on everyone else because voices in your head tell you your Jesus is The One -- even though your Jesus never said one single solitary word in any of the four gospels of the Bible about abortion or fertilized eggs being human. You've just gone and made it up about 'life beginning at conception.' Jesus never said that. The little voice in your head said that, the same little voice that wants your grubby paws on women's uteruses. You need help. Please get some help and leave the rest of us alone, Mr. Stupak and friends."

I have no doubt whatsoever that "money quote" is derived from "money shot." ;)

Hee hee, it's an inside joke based on something that a friend of mine said after her teenage son ate an entire cheesecake and then had to have his stomach pumped. She said something like, "everyone in the world is a loose cannon, just a cheesecake away from disaster."

Aha! And I see that, although I'm usually a pretty good speller, I guess I'm so used to writing "canon" on lj that I wrote it when I meant "cannon."

It isn't about abortion at all. I'm not even sure it's about women. It's about having enough bread to feed the tigers in the arena at the circus.

I thought it's the Christians that get fed to the big cats. But here it's the Christians doing the feeding...

I haven't caught up on everything so I will admit my ignorance there. But I don't understand everyone assuming that to be pro-life means you're a. religious and b. trying to control someone. I am no either yet I have been pro-life as far back as I can remember. Actively, at some points in my life. My children would not be here if that were not the case, especially my first. I cannot imagine my life without her but had I not felt so strongly on the issue she would not be here, and the other two most assuredly would not have followed. Just saying, a lot of women are pushed into abortion, just as often as not. That's also controlling someone's uterus. If abortion weren't on the table here, how would people vote? It shouldn't even be brought up, in my opinion. This is about providing healthcare to those who, for one reason or another, don't have it. That's the issue, I wish people would stay on topic. I am, of course, speaking of the people controlling the issue at hand as much as everyone else.

Well, abortion *is* health care and its availability is just awful in this country. But in countries that don't try to control women's access to reproductive services and do provide health care for all, abortion rates are much lower. So those on the right who claim to want to reduce abortion rates should be clamoring for single payer health care, universal child care, free access to reproductive services, but instead they're against all of those things. So, it's not really about abortion.

What I was saying is that there are a lot of people who will only pick out the parts about abortion, whether pro or con, minimizing the other issues. I just wish more people would speak up about the other issues instead of every post I see being about the abortion issue again. If I bring anything up it's put down as selfish because I'm disabled and haven't had insurance for three years because I'm "uninsurable" for having those disabilities. I can't wait any longer for this country to get it's act together and have to move to the one state that has universal healthcare, even though I can't afford the move by a longshot but can't afford to live without the healthcare any longer. While everyone quibbles over abortion, again.

I don't know that everyone is "quibbling over abortion." I think it's a crying shame that the federal government doesn't pay for abortions, but even the left wing of the Democratic party isn't trying to overturn that. Some people on the right within the Democratic party and a lot of people in the Republican party tried to make abortion an issue in federal health care in spite of the fact that it was not covered by government funds in any version of the proposed bill. I don't think that's quibbling over abortion; I think it's using abortion as an excuse to not provide health insurance. Which is what the article I linked to said, only better. And I'm glad it didn't work.

That's what I meant. It shouldn't be something that's "the" issue. Deal with the whole as a whole or in parts but don't pick out this one thing that's been argued about since the '70's. Again. It's to the point of ridiculous. Pick another thing to argue about, you know? Or, maybe you don't agree. I'm just tired of the argument.
