My Online Life
hasn't included lj lately. I keep trying to read my friends list, even though I'm not posting, but it doesn't feel quite the same as when I'm doing both. I'll try to get back in the swing of things.

I wrote a piece for my local parents' group blog about the Longitudinal Study of Lesbian Parenting that was published last week. It turned out to be a more personal take on the study than a summary of the research, but I figure that's okay since everyone else was summarizing research. It's here. stirsmn - I hope it's okay that I gave them that picture.

I was featured in an article on abcnews.com on the long term unemployed. It can be found here.

I think the migration from LJ to Facebook that I see (not just you) is sad. Facebook makes it much less possible to filter out the noise that comes at you and focus on the content and people that matter.

Going the other way, Facebook makes it terribly difficult to filter information only to those you want to read it. As a result, I find myself about to make a comment to a friend, only to realize that he's not out to his parents and they are possibly reading his Facebook. Etc.

The default format of Facebook is the short, zippy blast as opposed to the considered piece of writing. Personal blogging becomes Infotainment and, like that genre, favours the funny and sunny.

I hope we don't lose this deeper format.

Not to mention posting naked pictures of ourselves!

Hey, I haven't migrated to facebook. I barely use it. I agree that it is an inferior medium, even though I don't post naked pictures of myself (but am happy to look at naked pictures of others).

Facebook's Notes application allows for longer more ruminative writing that can be targeted at specific individuals (who can share it or not depending on how one sets the privacy of the note).

There are ways to kind of shoehorn content into facebook, it's true. But, to me, the main difference between the two media is that lj is about content, and the social aspects arise out of the content. You write something in your journal; you write things in community journals; people friend you because they're interested in what you write about or how you write or both. And out of that arises social connection.

OTOH facebook is all about social connection and any content that arises from it is secondary.

I think lj is very much a writer's social medium. It's blogging with features that facilitate connection.

Very nice piece, Dale!

By coincidence, I read this Dan Savage article today about a cross-country trip with his partner and their son.

That's an excerpt from The Commitment, which I really enjoyed. You should read it.

Dale, I'm so sorry to hear that you're still going through this. I am thinking of you. I friended you awhile ago on LinkedIn--did you ever accept? I have some IT pros in my network there.
