(Bad) Signs of the Times
I had a meeting at the UJA Federation building in midtown yesterday. I'd never been there but had the address. I walked by the building twice before I realized where it was. Now I'm terrible with directions but in this case it wasn't entirely my fault. They own the building, so I was expecting a big sign saying United Jewish Appeal Federation or some such. The building's facade, which was renovated within the last few years, has nothing on it to indicate what's inside.

New York has the second largest Jewish population of any city in the world. Yet UJA's management decided it wasn't safe to be visibly Jewish in midtown. And the worst part is - I think they're probably right.

::sigh:: I used to roll my eyes at some of the precautions but...yeah. I'm beginning to think they're right to have a cop around during the High Holidays, etc.

And as soon as you said that, I realized what was up. But then, I've had to get to the invisible Israeli embassy a few times in the past. I'm so used to staying invisible (both on the Jewish and Israeli fronts) unless prompted I barely think about it anymore.

Same thing at the Jewish Museum, in Manhattan--no sign. I think they're probably right, too. -- k
