My Remix Experience 2007
I did remixredux for the second time this year and had a good time! For those unfamiliar with the concept, in a remix you take someone else's story and rewrite it. Those who join get assigned an author to do a remix for, and someone gets assigned to rewrite theirs. The stories are posted anonymously at first, and then the author is revealed a week or so later. Yesterday was the big unmasking.

The lovely and talented sionnain was my remixer. She took my story "Having Writ, Moves On" to rewrite. It's a post-X2 story (but before X3 came out, so it does not match the events in that movie) about Pyro finding out that life as a bad guy with Magneto's team doesn't quite match the grand vision he'd been sold on. You can read the original at http://mo.fandomnation.com/fic/viewstory.php?sid=222.

sionnain took the story and kind of turned it on its head. She made Mystique, a fairly minor character in the original, the force that causes all the action in the revised version. It's very well done and makes for a great ocmpanion piece to the original. Thanks again, sionnain. Read her remix at http://community.livejournal.com/remix_redux/45165.html.

For my remix assignment, I was surprised to get the same author I got last year. She only had one X-Men story and I'd remixed it last year, so I needed to branch out. I wrote a remix of a TPM story of hers, a fandom I read avidly but have never written in. It takes place after Qui-Gon's death and has Obi-wan trying to come to terms with the loss of his master and lover. I rewrote it from the POV of Obi-wan and changed both the focus and the ending. It was a fun exercise and a departure from my usual writing, not only in terms of fandom. My remix is at http://community.livejournal.com/remix_redux/23090.html. Follow the link from there to read the original story.

Ha! I thought you'd written a different story, because it had such good yiddishkeit :) Of course, it occurs to me that I don't even know if you *watch* House...but the story seemed like your style.

I've never seen House. But now I have to check out the story you thought was mine!

Hmmm. I just read it (I think - it was one with a lot of Jewish content) and enjoyed it, but it didn't sound like me to me :-).

Are House and Wilson Jewish in canon? James Wilson and Gregory House don't seem like Jewish names to me...

Wilson and Cuddy are both Jewish in canon, House is not. The one that reminded me of you was a holiday story in which Cuddy celebrates various holidays. :) It was a five things fic, but I can't remember the name just now!

Okay, I found it! How funny - I had the wrong story. I never heard of Cuddy btw - the extent of my knowledge about House is that Hugh Laurie plays him, he plays him as an American, he's kind of a jerk, and he's often paired with Wilson. Anyway, I looked under House and Wilson as characters and came up with a remix story about Wilson coming out to his mother and grandmother and stopped looking. The subject matter seemed like something I'd do, but the style didn't sound at all like me.

So, back to the drawing board. I found the Cuddy story (it was an 8 things, not five) and liked it a lot. And I do think it sounds like something I could have written! Well, if I'd known anything about the characters :-).

So, I'm still trying to figure out how a Jewish guy would be named "James Wilson"?

::grin:: I'm glad I wasn't totally hallucinating when I thought you'd written it :)

And dude, not only is James Wilson the least Jewish name *ever*, but the actor is the least Jewish looking actor in Hollywood, I swear! I mean, he's a great character, but he seems about as Jewish as pork loins. Now Cuddy definitely seems Jewish to me. And somehow Lisa Cuddy is at least slightly more Jewish-sounding than James Wilson!

I knew your name looked familiar!

Yes, I am rather short of the X-Men. That's much more my sister's fandom.

I thought you did a lovely job with both of them. Maybe next year, you'll get someone else. Not that I'd mind having you do it a third year.
