Zara at Camp
This is pic spam, as my friend mamajoan says. Zara's camp is a Girl Scout camp on Cape Cod. Girl Scout camps are cheaper than standard sleepaway camps, partly because the kids do a lot of the work. They have chores, called "capers", that rotate among the kids. This was posted to the Camp Favorite website:

She's the one in red. She looks a lot happier than I would be if I were cleaning latrines. I just sent her an email saying I saw a picture of her cleaning latrines and hope she's doing lots of other fun stuff, too {g}.

I think kids doing more of the chores is a great idea if they are also give the chance to feel some ownership over the community they are helping to build and maintain. Calling the chores "capers" is hypocritical and rather hilarious. It calls for the kids to do some vandalism and call it "creative expression." Or a better analogy might be it calls for people to play mean tricks on each other and call it "bonding".

I'm glad she's having a good time! Sleeping in tents = life is good.

All sorts of stuff at Girl Scout camp has special names. I wouldn't read anything into "capers" particularly. I agree it's good for kids to do chores, and not just because it reduces the cost to parents!

I just think things should be called what they are, not softened with euphemisms. For one thing, it reduces the value of the word "capers". Which is a wonderful word and I will have to find from for it Chapter 14 which is full of them.

Cute picture and I'm glad she is enjoying herself. But I certainly cannot take credit for the term "picspam" which is used profligately(???) all over LJ. :)

She is cute. Not that I'm biased or anything :-)I should post some pics of her recent trip to the Twin Cities. There were some very cute ones of her and her little cousin at the Minnesota Zoo.

I miss her! Although at the same time I'm enjoying not having parental responsibilities for a while. Kendra went to her other mother's house last night and with Zara at camp, it was the first night since June that I had only no kids at home except for my son (and his friend for a while, but then they went out). Doran is(nominally) an adult and I don't have to get him up and out in the morning and he can fend for himself generally. Well, actually he forgot his keys so I had to wake up to let him in and he did want me to wake him up this morning so he wouldn't be late for work. And I did do his laundry last night. Hmmm, maybe I'm not so totally without parental responsibilities as I thought...

Uh, oh- despite my best efforts what your describing with Doran sounds a lot like the kinda stuff my mom still has to do for me (sans the laundry)... maybe I'm not as grown up as I like to think I am, lol.

And you should def post those pics of her- I love your icon with her and getting to see more of your children would be a real treat!
