Questions I Have Reading the News Lately|
The Great Sudanese Teddy Bear Controversy - the kids chose "Muhammed" as a name for the teddy bear because it's such a common first name, in their experience. Why is it disrespectful to name an anthropomorphic character "Muhammed" but not disrespectful to name real people "Muhammed"?
Mike Jones, Gay Male Escort in the News - If gay male culture is so youth oriented, how is a 50-year-old guy making a living advertising on places with names like "Rentboy"?
Lori Drew's New Story - Lori Drew told the police that she created the Josh Evans account and that she, her employee, and her daughter all typed messages under that name when she complained to them about the Megan Meiers's parents destroying her foosball table. The police report is widely available. Why does she think people will believe her now when she says it was her daughter and the employee who did it and she had nothing to do with it? Wouldn't people be more likely to think she's even more scummy for doing this and then pinning it on her kid?
Why would anybody believe anything Rudy Giuliani says, especially if it has numbers in it?
Anyone with answers, please weigh in.

I can only provide you my standard answer for moments like this: People are stupid. People in groups are stupider.

Is that an answer applicable to all the questions, or a specific one?

I would say that at least one part of my answer applies to each of the questions. In some cases, both apply.

Well, in the Mike Jones case the stupid one has to be me, because I can't for the life of me figure out how a middle-aged guy is making a living as a rent boy.
Prostitutes come in all shapes and sizes, apparently. Gerald Hannon, a pioneering gay activist in Toronto and one of the original writers on the Body Politic was fired a few years ago from his job as a professor at Ryerson University after writing in an article about his other work as a prostitute. He was in his 50s at the time.
He's a really neat guy, actually. I took a walking tour of gay Toronto history that he was leading last spring.

He certainly sounds interesting. Was he fired because of the prostitution.
I, who have the worst sense of direction in the world, once gave a gay history walking tour of Greenwich Village. I had great fun researching all the buildings and had lots of interesting things to say. But I got lost every time I practiced.
Yes, I should have made that clearer. He was fired for being a prostitute, which is rather hilarious.

Sometimes universities have clauses in faculty contracts saying they can be fired for illegal behavior...
I think the teddy bear flap arose because the Sudanese people didn't view it as an anthropomorphic character, but as a representation of an animal, a low beast. Therefore unworthy of the name and insulting.

That makes sense - if you don't understand the assignment, then it might be like naming a pet a sacred name...
We met a lovely young woman from Spain when we were in India. She had made the mistake of telling a few Hindi that she had named her dog Shiva.

Presumably if she named her dog "Jesus Christ" she would have realized it could offend :-).
Because Rudy Giuliani is a hero. He stopped the 9/11 terrorists.
because something is really wrong with lori drew? check this:http://meganhaditcoming.blogspot.com/
I haven't heard about Mike Jones, but IDK, maybe he's a well-preserved 50.
as for the sudanese thing ... no idea. SOmeone had an idea and ran with it.

Do you think that's really Lori Drew? Pretty sick either way.
Mike Jones is the guy who brought Ted Haggard down. He now says that Larry Craig paid him $200 for sex a couple of years ago as well.
I don't think it's actually Lori Drew, but it's not like she's demonstrated good internet judgment in the past, so ?
Mike Jones really got around. Maybe the closeted guys passed on his number.
Rudy. I forgot Rudy.
I think the answer there would have to be "They don't know him like we do."
|Date:||December 5th, 2007 02:55 pm (UTC)|| |
That's kind of how I've felt from the start. But I'd think they're getting to know him. He keeps getting caught lying - or "misspeaking" if you prefer - and he not only doesn't apologize, he keeps making the same statements even after they've been proven false.
It worked for Bush. For a while anyway.
how is a 50-year-old guy making a living advertising on places with names like "Rentboy"?
The same way that a 50-year-old female prostitute is a "working girl"?
As for the Muhammed problem, there's both the problem that they named a toy animal, not a doll, Muhammed. Also, the protest in Khartoum was the least spontaneous protest I've ever seen - everyone had the same signs!

I don't think there are a lot of 50-year-old female prostitutes who get $200 per sex act, either. In general, my impression is that - like professional sports - it's an occupation people age out of pretty quickly.
