Palin as Anti-Abortion Counselor
When Katie Couric asked Sarah Palin to clarify her position that abortion should be illegal even in the case of a fifteen-year-old girl who has been raped by her father, Palin said that she would "counsel" the girl to "choose life." "Counseling" sounds like such a nice thing to do! It makes one think of summer camp and guidance counselors and marriage counselors.

On the other hand, Palin doesn't need to change the U.S. Constitution or pack the Supreme Court enough to reverse Roe v. Wade to "counsel" anyone. If the child in question had no family to protect her from "pro-lifers" then Palin can certainly counsel her to give birth to her rapist's child and her own sibling under today's law. They can counsel her to raise the son/brother or daughter/sister herself or to try to find an adoptive couple not scared off by incest.

Reversing Roe v. Wade and making abortion illegal in this country would have no impact on anyone's ability to counsel anyone else. It would force that 15-year-old girl to give birth to her rapist's child or risk her own life in an illegal operation. I hope the vast majority of USAmerican voters realize that voting for the McCain/Palin ticket is voting for a President and a Vice President, for a change in the Supreme Court, for a continuation of the failed Republican policies. It's not voting for a counselor.

The whole give birth to a kid if your father is the father of the fetus? I've read enough stories (Probably half a dozen) about girls in the United States who had fathers (and others in their lives) who killed them for getting pregnant. Chose life and demand parental consent so that you put yourself at a higher risk for both you and the fetus being killed! Yay! Ummm. Not how my world says you should respect life. *sighs*

It's easy to counsel someone when *you're* not the one who has to live with the pain.

Sure. Just counsel and counsel and counsel and don't let the girl out of the room until she's changed her mind. That's totally "choosing life". Then we'll have a traumatized 15-year-old with an unwanted child. And this is the family values candidate?

Don't you know? "Family Values" is just Republican code word for hating gay people and women.

This brings me back to my clinic defense days, standing outside as some poor woman tried to get into the clinic, while a crowd yelled "Murderer!" at her. Yeah, nice counseling there.

I've never forgotten standing on a street corner and hearing a woman tell her son (not much older than Yael), "Honey, these people kill children just like you." It still breaks my heart to remember.

::sigh:: I really should check and see if the local clinics still need escorts.

Amazing that that woman thought terrorizing her child like that was a good thing.

She has no respect for anyone else's life or decisions - she's the person that cut funding for special education and then parades her disabled infant son around as a badge of "choice". I'm glad for the son's sake that he is in a wealthy, connected family who can take care of him, but she's a classic "focus on the babies" type who then has no problem denying those babies opportunities and equality as they grow up.
