The ironic thing is that the California vote was close enough that without the extra turnout from people excited about Obama it probably would not have passed.
I don't for a minute believe that his objections are religious. This is a man who is a professor of Constitutional Law and understands and supports separation of church and state. He totally said that for political expedience. And I think he really believed he had to, and he certainly has proven himself to be a shrewd politician. I say that *admiringly* - it takes a lot more than smarts and charisma to get things done and he's shown he can get things done brilliantly. But it does make me sad, and as I said, I'm trying not to be bitter about it. I even forgive him for the War on Mutants :-).
On the state constitution issue - California's constitution is amended by referendum and it could, conceivably, be amended again. I don't think it will any time soon, though. I think this will likely be resolved at the federal level before that happens. And it's particularly sad because the California Supreme Court decision was so beautifully thought out and written.
