My Yuletide Experience|
First of all, let me say, I LOVED your story, and I've just added both "Fingersmith" and the book of Victorian lesbian erotica to my Amazon wishlist! I loved that you did research to discover how Victorian erotica really would have been written, and that you re-read the book to get the tone right.
I don't participate in Yuletide for a number of reasons, but I really enjoyed reading about the process. I also love that the Yuletide website is somewhere I can go if I have a hankering for fic in a fandom that seems as if it would be small or nonexistent. (For example, I recently watched the film "Secretary", and wondered if there would be fanfic for it. Sure enough, four stories were written this year alone for Yuletide.)
Also, I normally don't like "romantic" stories, but somehow when they're written in Victorian or Dickensian English they suddenly become enjoyable. I don't know why that is. :-)

I'm glad you liked it! Although now you know how the novel ends. It's a good ride, anyway.
There's a BBC miniseries based on Fingersmith. I considered seeing it as part of my research but decided I didn't want those images crowding out the ones I had in my head, at least before I wrote. I think I'll watch it now that I'm done, though.
Do you not participate in Yuletide because it's a Christmas thing? At least as one of the reasons? I'm fine with that aspect (although I hate it when people pretend it's *not* a Christmas ficathon). But I'm also happy to go to Christmas parties friends host and give Christmas gifts to close friends who celebrate Christmas. It's not my holiday and I don't celebrate, but I'm fine with sharing the non-religious accoutrements to some extent. So I was fine with Yuletide.
Its association with Christmas is one reason, yes, but another is that it's one of the busiest times of the year for me at work and there is just no way I could put the time I'd like into it. Summer Solstice tide--or whatever--THAT I could do!

Maybe you should start a Summer Solstice one!
Hey, I have both of the books - Fingersmith and the Victorian lesbian erotica one - and I'd be happy to lend them. Maybe you and me and executrix
and any other NY area slash fen we should think of should plan an outing. We could have dinner and slash-chat somewhere. Somewhere cheap, like Chinatown...
I would LOVE that! I can do either Saturday or Sunday, day is better than night, and Chinatown sounds great.
eta: p.s. I only borrow books if the lender doesn't mind lending them out for about a year, because that's about how long it takes me to get to them!

I don't mind lending out books long term. I was actually going to say you can have them, and then I thought I might want them back some time.
I can't do this weekend or next, but generally I'm free on Sundays during the day. What are your next few Sundays like? We could have dim sum! I'll email Dana. Can you think of any other NY area fen? They don't actually have to be slashers, although they ought to be slash-friendly.
I can't do next weekend (10 & 11) but I can do the three following that. shaheyred
is in NYC and I would love to meet her! I will have to think about if there are others.
is in NYC, too. Do you know either of them?Edited at 2009-01-03 02:26 am (UTC)

I don't know them, but I'd love to meet them.
So, how about we suggest:
- 1/18 (which is Sunday of a long weekend, not sure if that's better or worse)
and see if one of those works for all of us. I'll email executrix
, you ask those two. And then if we can come up with a date, we can open to others, too, if we think of any.

I think I talked her into it :-). She has a standing engagement on Sundays but I believe the lure of slash and dim sum will get her to blow them off for one day - 1/25. She also had a couple of people she could ask.
Btw, I tried emailing you but the email address I had was defunct, apparently.
Cool! I will email shayheyred and tell her we're on for the 25th.
Weird about the email. It's still lemurgrrrl at gmail dot com.
