Is M/M Slash Like Pseudo-Lesbian Porn Produced for Straight Men?|
I think power dynamics in relationships are very interesting, and one of the more interesting things about same-sex relationships is that there is no socially imposed gender-related power scheme to fall back on, so the individuals have to figure it out for themselves.
Yeah! Thanks, that's it. Many women talk about the equal power as to why they like slash, but I never understood. It's the hammering out of the distribution that makes it interesting for me. In fact, frankly, that's what makes it hot. I do like my tough men discovering new emotional vistas, although they don't cry much. *G*
As long as I'm here, I might as well say I don't read a lot of het fanfic, but then again I've been a heavy consumer of romance novels for -- oh, about 35 years. I've read f/f if I'm really into a character. I read Scully slash for a while, but the main writers were men, and Scully -- this neurotically wary and contained person -- was always falling into bed with someone or other the day she met her. That was boring. Even in their novellas, there wasn't much emotional development, just action and some more fairly boring sex. :P
Occasionally I've read f/f that was WAY hot, but it's been stories that appealed to my kinks. At least the Harry Potter fandom didn't have to resort to ofcs to get a couple women laid. :)

Yeah, I think equal power is not really correct. It's the lack of an assumed power dynamic that's what's really operating. A lot of what I explore in my slash and a lot of what I like in others' is how power is distributed in the relationship and how that changes over time.
