Okay, so not only have I only seen 15 of them, I haven't even heard of some of them. And I'm seriously questioning how the American remake of La Cage aux Folles makes the list and the original doesn't. Also, does "gay" just mean "gay male" - not lesbian? Maybe there's another list for lesbian films...

ETA: And surely Milk should be on there! But maybe it's a pre-Milk list.

If it's from After Elton, then it's probably just gay male. After Ellen is for lesbians.

I couldn't find a comparable list on After Ellen. Do you know of one? I did find a list of the 9 Worst Lesbian Breakup Scenes.

I seem to recall one from last year, from about this time of year, but I wouldn't have any idea how to find it again other than searching the site.

Wow! I've seem most of them... and I own (but have not watched) several of the remaining ones. I'm guessing that my partner (the_cur) has seen nearly all of them.

And yes, these are just the gay male movies. :) Check AfterEllen to see if they have the lesbian list.

It is a Pre-Milk list. They did this in early 2008.

I strongly recommend Get Real and Parting Glances. I thought Milk was an awful disappointment, though.

I've seen twenty six of them. One of my favourites is C.R.A.Z.Y although I wouldn't call it just a gay film, as it's a little more complex as that.

Get Real is one of my favourites. Broken Hearts Club is good as a light film.

You'd have to search around on afterellen to find some good lesbian films, at least in list form.

I, too, love C.R.A.Z.Y and your point is valid. It's the story of a family, especially the relationship between two brothers. While the queer theme is important, it's not all that's going on. Calling it a "gay film" ghettoizes it.

Heh, on the other hand, Harvey Fierstein objects to people saying, "Torch Song Trilogy isn't a gay film; it's universal!" He says, fuck you, it's a gay film. It's great if non-queers can universalize it to their lives (as gay people have to do with all those str8 films), but it IS a gay film.

Poor, poor list emphasizing only the most commercially accessible and least transgressive movies. There are good movies on the list, but where are Kenneth's Anger's films? Where is Taxi zum Klo?

Like most top-whatever lists on entertainment pages, it emphasizes only what can be easily found in vid stores and skews to the recent.

Lots of good ones you haven't seen, btw. I recommend Parting Glances, Mysterious Skin, Shortbus, Wedding Banqeut, C.R.A.Z.Y., Edge of Seventeen, Angels in America, Love! Valour! Compassion!, The Sum of Us and Transamerica.

Love! Valour! Compassion! is one of my favourite movies despite its flaws.
