I want to hear about the smuggling! Because I live in an island nation with massively strict quarantine rules, I'm immediately thinking of drug smuggling, farm sabotage and wildlife smuggling! A vest full of lizard eggs all over your body on a 14-hour flight!

It's probably less exciting than that if you live somewhere with land borders, though.

Yeah, not quite so exciting. My first time smuggling was on a long flight, but inadvertent. I spent the summer I was 15 in Israel on a teen tour. Most of the time I was with my group, but I spent a few days with Israeli cousins of mine. They had been excavating a Roman ruin near their home, archaelogy being pretty much the national sport. And they gave me some artificats - Roman tile, a couple of old coins, pot sherds, and some objects from farther down that they thought were cave man tools. Cool stuff, but it's illegal to take archeological artifiacts out of the country without permission. My Hebrew wasn't so good and neither was their English and they told me to pack the stuff carefully - they meant to hide it, I thought so it wouldn't break. Anyway, I got through. I wish I had that stuff now, but my parents kept it. They did make a cool display out of it in our living room.

Beyond that, I lived in Canada for a few years and brought stuff illegal in the U.S. over a lot. Nothing I could get arrested for - just things that would be confiscated if found. Laws on a bunch of things are slightly different in the two countries, so there's stuff you can buy in Canada (OTC drugs, products from certain countries, some kinds of produce) that were not legal for sale or import in the U.S.

See? Planes = exciting smuggling! That's very cool indeed. And I've noticed that the US has slightly different drug laws to us (Canada and Australia are very similar in a lot of ways, including the health system) so I suppose that would explain it. We do have produce exclusion zones all over the country, though - I'm in a grape and potato exclusion zone, meaning everything that's not grown here has to be checked before it comes in.

When I lived in Canada mandarin oranges were illegal in the U.S.! So I used to bring them in. Oh, and anything from Cuba.

I still bring OTC drugs, but I think the laws have loosened up since then and you can bring stuff that couldn't be sold in this country as long as you're bringing small amounts.
