I first saw the ocean when I was seven years old and have loved it ever since.

Fire Island is great. Because there are no cars allowed it feels like another world. My first experience of it was The Pines and Cherry Grove, which are the gay towns. Lots of nightlife, but Uncle Ruth's part is much better for families. There's a playground, library, a beach on the bay, really good lifeguards.

The beaches are all public on Fire Island, but because it's a production to get there, they never get crowded. You could do a day trip but if you don't have a friend's house to use as a base, it's not that easy. There aren't changing rooms and lockers on the beach, just beach.

My kids are the other extreme from yours - especially Doran. He's been hauled out of the ocean, complaining that he was fine. But he was certainly too far out and wouldn't have been fine if they hadn't brought him in. The lifeguards at Saltaire are very good.

I hadn't been to the beach at all this year (except one outing to Coney Island, but I was by myself and just walked along the beach). Stacy generally takes the kids (or whichever kids are around) to Jones Beach once or twice a summer, but she has the car and it's not that easy without. Last year I was with Vicki and we went to the beach where her mother lived a few times, bringing Zara along. That's a private beach - you can't go there unless you live in the town or are a guest of someone who does.
