I had a meeting at the UJA Federation building in midtown yesterday. I'd never been there but had the address. I walked by the building twice before I realized where it was. Now I'm terrible with directions but in this case it wasn't entirely my fault. They own the building, so I was expecting a big sign saying United Jewish Appeal Federation or some such. The building's facade, which was renovated within the last few years, has nothing on it to indicate what's inside.
New York has the second largest Jewish population of any city in the world. Yet UJA's management decided it wasn't safe to be visibly Jewish in midtown. And the worst part is - I think they're probably right.
