During a Winter Much Like This One Long Ago...
I was picking four-year-old Doran up from preschool/daycare one winter day. There had been many snowstorms and the weather had stayed cold enough for the snow to stick around for weeks (both pretty unusual in New York City). Consequently, there were high piles of plowed snow that we had to get around, and sometimes over, in order to go from preschool to the subway that would take us home.

I had baby Kendra strapped to my chest so I couldn't really pick Doran up and carry him over the mounds of snow. To keep him on task, I made a game of it. He was the Great Mountain Guide Sherpa Doran and he was guiding me through the mountains to the subway. He was quite into it. At a particularly high pile, I said, "Do you want me to hold your hand while you go over?"

"No!" he indignantly replied (Doran has always done indignant well). "Famous Sherpa guides never hold their mommies' hands!" Then he thought about it a little more and added, "Except when they're crossing the street."

Awwww...

1996? That was the bad winter I remember.

On a related topic, I am very grateful on days like this to only have one child and be past the stroller stage. Although crossing the street over the huge piles of snow with a four-year old is still a challenge and I am totally going to use this sherpa guide thing.

This was 1993. 1996 had a huge blizzard but not repeated storms and enduring cold, I don't think. And you're welcome to the sherpa thing!

That's adorable. I love memories like that, even though they're big now we can still have our little ones in our hearts.

How are you?

Well, this amount of snow wasn't quite expected. Angel's school's been called out a lot, I have a feeling she's going to be in school half the summer. Some things have been really hard but they're pulling together better now. We're loving it. :) I'm going to have to make an icon for this snow!

How sweet!

I sent your Christmas card to your old address like an idiot. :) PM me with your new address, and I'll mail it to you again.

Hee. Cute.

Though, giant piles of snow + 4-year-old + baby = quite a challenge! Congratulations on having survived all that.

It's so telling of a four-year-old's world view, yk?

That is adorable, and now will be my image of cities and snow (I've never seen "big piles of snow", just enough to accumulate against trees.)

Oh my! http://onlytheblogknowsbrooklyn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/Tree-Down-in-Slope-Feb-2010-Snowstorm-1.jpg is a picture of my neighborhood right after a snowstorm last year. Usually, since NYC winters are mild, the snow gets cleared off the streets, then a few days later it melts. But every once in a while we get a winter like this one, with multiple snow storms and no thaw in between. There's nowhere for the snow to go, so when it gets plowed off of the street and shoveled off of the sidewalk it ends up in big piles.
