Once in a long while they admit to lying. Jon Kyl, Republican senator from Arizona, brazenly lied on the Senate floor, claiming that "well over 90% of what Planned Parenthood does is abortion." This was said in support of defunding Planned Parenthood, which receives some federal money that - by law - cannot be used for abortion services.
Abortion is actually about 3% of Planned Parenthood's operations. There's a good chart here showing what they really do: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/ezra-klein/post/what-planned-parenthood-actually-does/2011/04/06/AFhBPa2C_blog.html. That baldly false statement of Kyl's was the unsubtle, overt lie. Of course there is also the more insidious, implicit lie, in saying that the federal government needs to defund Planned Parenthood to stop them from using government funds for abortions, when they use none for that purpose.
In a refreshing and unusual bit of candor, Kyl's office did retract the overt lie, sort of. They released a statement that what he said "was not intended to be a factual statement." Of course it wasn't. The Republican war on women's control of our own bodies is conducted mostly in lies. They lie every time they say they want to reduce abortions while at the same time trying to prevent women's access to contraception. They lie every time they talk about defunding federal government support of abortion when it already happened. They just don't usually admit it.
