Recs Meme - Mo's Journal
I got this one from alestar
. It looks like fun. I know not everyone on my flist writes, but for those who do:Rec-Go-Round: Rec me one story you've written that you're proud of, any genre, here on my LJ.
Then go forth and ask the same in yours.
Or two or three, if you really want to and can't decide, but if you go for that, then rec in different fandoms. But try not to do any of that self-effacing, "Oh, I'm an attention whore so it might not be," or, "But I'm not very good" or whatever. I just want to read what you're most proud of - I'm not going to reassure you that you're fabulous.
I've included the disclaimer at the end, but I doubt it's necessary for this crowd. I think my flist consists of people who are fabulous and know it!
An interesting meme, one I'll post it in my LJ.
In Lord of the Rings, I'd say "The Naming of Qualities."
I've written longer series, and more twisty plots, but this one is my baby, my favorite. It's angsty to the max, Faramir brooding half the time, but for a logical reason. And I think of it as special because it was also the first fiction I had written in nearly 20 years after giving that up.
I've only just begun with Queer as Folk, but of what I've written thus far, I'd say "10,000 Fucks."
Pre-series Brian spoke to me, and I think he did so in an authentic, non-abused, non-romanticized, non-corrupted way.

I don't know LOTR, but I just read "10,000 Fucks" and completely, totally adored it. You've got Brian!
Thank you! *blushes bright red* I'm hearing him loud and clear.
Okay, I'll play. Betters(writing as Lost Owl)is one I'm really proud of. http://www.west-of-the-moon.net/servlet/ReadSlashStory?storyID=241
It's not my best-ever-written story, but it was the one where I got down fictionally issues I like to deal with nonfictionally, and I think I finally got Sam's voice right. It was also carefully, carefully slashed to fit in with Tolkien's description of incidents, so it took me a long time. I don't think most people reading it really picked up on the slashing of canon scenes, but I loved doing it!
Liked this meme a lot.

I love this story of yours. I think it's the first one I FB'ed you on, when we were just getting to know each other. I don't know LOTR, so I certainly didn't pick up on slashing scenes from canon, but I thought he had a very authentic osunding voice.
I like your Harry icon. Did you make it yourself?
I think you need a Newly Painted Home icon. Or at least put some pictures in your journal.
Yes, I made the Harry icon. Now that I'm getting back to my "real" computer, I'm going to try making one with words; I have a phrase bouncing around in my head.
Good idea about pix in my lj -- I'll ask Sonja to send me them when we take them, after I finish unpacking. Right now, all you'd see would be boxes!
You've got a Harry pic too!

I look forward to seeing the pictures, boxes or no.
Yes, I got me some new icons. A few HP ones, a couple V for Vendetta ones, some X3 ones, some Jewish ones, and some kid ones. This one is Zara being me. Every morning I wake up and drink coffee and do email/lj. So, when one morning I saw this, I had to take a picture.
That one's REALLY funny! It gives me a good picture of you reading this comment, too...
Someone on a recs and search list recommended a completely gen HP interaction. I've read the first couple pages and am hooked. So I will forward the story to you for any kid who wants to read it.
Last night, as I was putting computer stuff together, I discovered I have quite a nice night view of the capitol and what passes in this city for downtown. Lagniappe after the door that locks...

I look forward to reading the story.
I am so happy you are settled. How is the writing coming? Do you have Pesach plans?
Oooh, gorgeous icon!
Since I'm not yet settled (don't have a bed yet, so still sleeping on the friend's couch) the writing isn't coming. It will soon, though -- the computer is now up, though of course no phone yet. Tomorrow is a big day for moving in scheduling -- two friends coming over to nag me.
No Pesach plans. I should get on that. It was horrible last year not to have a place in town to go... well, horrible not to have Pesach, actually. I promised myself I wouldn't do that this year.

What is your mocked and spat upon fandom?
I had a little trouble following it. I mean, I understood the sex :-). But what is WWE?

My son once referred to the WWF and I thought he was talking about this!
I will not mock or spit upon your fandom, but I admit I find it a little hard to relate to. Taste is so individual, though. I imagine there are some people who think writing stories about mutant superheroes who have sex with each other is a strange hobby. I don't know that I've ever met any, but...

is probably the XMen fic that I'm proudest of, in terms of how much research went into it and how effectively the themes were conveyed.
My personal favorite is "Phoenix Rising"
, as it was the first fic where I finished edits and was perfectly happy with how I'd translated my mental images into words.

Endlosung was the first story of yours I read! For those reading this journal who didn't read that one, here's what I said in comments at the time:
I think this was just excellent! It does everything I want from fanfic - enhances and expands on the source text, develops character, gives a window into relationships only glimpsed obliquely in canon. Very impressive.
I looke forward to reading Phoenix Rising.
