Good essay, and also thanks for the link to idol_reflection--looks like an interesting community.

Yes, I think it's a great idea. Do you know crack_van? It's a recs community but it also has intros to fandoms that I've found useful when I didn't know the source text. I see idol_reflection as doing the same for individual characters.

Interesting comparison! I watch crack van but it's not on my friends list because it's too active, but it can be a good way to find out about fandoms.

Idol reflection compares itself to ships manifesto, which I've never read, but maybe should check out.

I like the opportunity to explore characters individually in this kind of longish essay format. I loved the one minisinoo wrote about Scott.

Yes. Me too, on both counts. Have you read any of minisinoo's fiction? I think her Scott is very interesting, in his various versions. I was saying elsewhere that I hope she hasn't totally deserted us for HP fandom.

And for all I said that I think it's a good way to get to know a character if you don't know the canon, I've only used it to read about characters I already know :-). I like the combo of info about the character and the personal feel of the "what I find compelling" part.

I've never been able to get into her stories, for some reason. I guess in part because they're Scott/Jean, which I don't find that interesting. But maybe I will try again.

It seems like a useful way to get more information about a character you already know a little. I knew very little about Northstar, so your essay was interesting. Minisinoo's analysis was interesting, because it gave me more perspective on Scott. I'm not sure I'd read about someone I didn't know at all.

They're not all Scott/Jean. Her first (I think) novel was about Scott breaking up with Jean and getting involved with another woman. And I'm told her new one has a Scott/Jean/Warren triangle with a gay Warren, but I haven't read it yet.

I actually like her work best when she does explore that relationship; I think she has a very interesting take on both characters and depicts an intriguing relationship.
