Truth and Lies Meme - the Answers

I gave ten statements about me - five were true and five were false. If you want to play, don't look behind the cut until you read and comment on the previous entry.

1. I’m the eldest of six siblings.

False I’m the second of six. My brother Joel is the eldest, although he occasionally tries to deny it. He’s 16 months older than I am. My sister Sharon, the youngest, is 15 years younger than I am, so she and I were not really raised together.

2. New York City is the southern-most place I’ve ever lived.

True I was born in Winnipeg but never lived there (my mother went home to have babies). I grew up in Northwood, North Dakota and West Hartford, Connecticut. As an adult I’ve lived in Montreal for five years, Albany for about a year and a half, and New York City, where I’ve been since 1980.

3. I got a perfect score on the LSAT but never went to law school.

True In 1990 I gave serious thought to going to law school. I took the test, chose out schools to apply to and worked the numbers. Ultimately I decided that we couldn’t afford it. I was the sole breadwinner in the family and even if I had gotten financial aid, it would have taken much of our savings and I’d have been out of work for three years. We decided to have another baby and buy an apartment instead.

4. I’m fluent in four languages.

False I wish it were true! English is the only language I’m truly fluent in. I speak and read French, but not as well as I did when I lived in Montreal, and even then I was not truly fluent. I can read and speak a little Russian, as well. I know some Hebrew.

5. The only non-North American countries I’ve been to begin with the letter I: India, Israel and Ireland.

False My first overseas trip was a “teen tour” to Israel the summer I was fifteen. As an adult, my ex and I went to India and Israel when we were together. She had never been overseas before those trips. We used to joke that we only go to places that begin with the letter I and we were trying to figure out whether to go to Ireland, Italy or Indonesia next. But then I got a job that required a fair amount of foreign travel. I did go to Ireland, but spent more time in England, and also went to Singapore and Japan.

6. I have three children and they can all juggle.
True My kids have all been in a wonderful drama program at the middle school they attend(ed). The first performance of the sixth grade is the Sixth Grade Circus. Clowns come into the school and teach the kids juggling and other circus arts.

7. I’m waiting to find out if I have cancer.

True I have a mass in my thyroid that’s been causing me all sorts of annoying symptoms. Ultrasound and nuclear imaging were not able to rule out malignancy, so I’m off to a surgeon tomorrow. I'm told thyroid cancer is a "good" kind to have. On the whole I'd rather not have any kind, but I would like to know what's wrong with me and start dealing with it.

8. My daughter Zara is named after Queen Elizabeth’s granddaughter.

False Queen Elizabeth does indeed have a granddaughter with the same name as my daughter. It was a bit of a royal scandal when Princess Anne gave her daughter such an unusual name. This was before a member of the royal family had been recorded saying he wished to be reincarnated as a tampon, so the bar for scandal was a little bit lower then. I found this out while researching the name before Zara’s birth (while I was in labor, to be precise) but we had already chosen the name, and she is not named for the royal Zara.

9. My kids are from a heterosexual marriage before I came out.

False I was married to a woman from 1974 until 2001 and we had three kids together. I have no other children.

10. I never heard of slash until October of 2000 and published my first slash series in November of 2000.

True I was fascinated by fanfic in general, and slash in particular, when I first discovered it. I thought I’d give it a try. I’m glad I did.
