This is my good news post!
I had my surgery yesterday and all went really well. The tumors looked benign and I got to keep part of my thyroid, too. I will have to wait until next week for biopsy results, but my surgeon says he's been doing this for 30 years and he knows what cancer looks like. I believe him. I don't know yet if there is enough thyroid left to avoid taking meds, but I don't mind taking thyroid meds if it comes to that.
I highly recommend Long Island College Hospital. Everybody was very nice to me, very attentive. I had a completely wonderful private room with a whole wall of windows overlooking the harbor. I could see lower Manhattan, the Statue of Liberty, Governor's Island. Sundown and sunrise were spectacular. How I rated this room, I don't know.
I still feel fairly lousy, sort of like someone cut into my throat yesterday morning, but I'm already much better than I was even this morning. I did laundry this afternoon, played scrabble, made dinner tonight, wrote the ninth story in the series I'm working on. My doctor said not to go back to work until after my post-op appointment next Thursday, but that's already starting to feel ridiculously long. I do have pretty good recuperative powers generally - it's my Wolverine tendencies.
So, that's the health news. And the other big news is: Doran's coming home! Things didn't work out for him in boot camp and luckily the Marines agree that he's not suited for the Corps, and they are sending him home. He says he wants to go to college in the fall. I don't know if he'll manage to do that, since it's kind of late to get started on applying to schools and financial aid, not to mention working and saving money to contribute to his education. But if he really gets his ass in gear, it's possible, and if not it would be just fine with me if he works for a year and takes a couple of classes and thinks about what he wants to do. In any event I'll just be glad to have him home! He has called a couple of times but he has very little time to talk when he does. The last we heard he said he'll be home in 10-15 business days. Zara said that makes him sound like a package from amazon.com.
So, I've had a crappy few weeks between my brother dying and all the drama around that, Doran leaving, health issues, etc. But things are looking up now. Thanks to all who've held my cyber-hand throughout.
