I thought he was using the Magneto angle to recruit Logan because it would work, not because that was all he cared about. I don't think Logan would have responded too well to "we take in abused mutants here".

Hmm, that's a point, except that's not how it happens. In fact, Charles does approach it with Logan from the angle of they'll protect him from Magneto. He says "My people brought you here" and that he's safe from Magnetor. IIRC, Logan asks "What's a Magneto?" and then mocks Charles for referring to him as a very powerful mutant and says he'll take his chances. It's Storm who later tries to get Logan to join the team because they need him.

What I meant wasn't that he used Magneto as a way to recruit Logan, but that his interest in Logan seems to be solely to find out how Magneto will use him. It's a good guess that it's Logan Magneto is after, since he's got metal in him and since Rogue just sort of seems to be a sidekick, but he wants them picked up so Magneto doesn't get Logan. And throughout Charles seems to me not the least bit compassionate - and I don't mean in speaking *to* Logan, but in general - about what Logan's gone through, which he likely knows better than anyone. Now, this could all be explained by Logan's personality, which Charles likely finds abrasive, so I don't think it necessarily means he is a callous guy...

He does help Logan at the end of the movie, by giving him a direction to look for his past. And there's lots of evidence of his warmth towards members of the team and towards the kids. I'm certainly not suggesting he's completely cold and calculating. But I think that side of him is there or at least inferrable if one wants (for - oh to pull an example off the top of my head - fanfic) to infer it. In my fiction, Charles helps Logan because he wants to get rid of him, feels he's disruptive to the team. But he later regrets that.

There are lots of ways to look at him, I think, in both movie and comic versions. But he's not a "nice guy" in a simplistic sense, I don't think.

Eek! Sorry about the runaway italics. I was just trying to italicize the word "protect" - to emphasize that Charles saying he would protect Logan against Magneto was not a great approach to win Logan over.

Oh, I think X3 pretty much ruled out the "nice guy" interpretation of Xavier's character. "Well-meaning", yes. But as you said, he's calculating, too. There's plenty of room for that take.

I have a lot of problems with X3, but Xavier is high on my list. I don't see him as simply a nice guy, as I said, but I just can't see him as not caring about Scott at all. I want to write X3 fanfic (in fact I'm thinking that's my next project) but I'm having trouble figuring out what to do with him. That whole "Scott hasn't been the same since Jean died, so let's ditch him" speech he makes in the beginning, combined with not really noticing Scott's dead later on has to be dealt with somehow, but I haven't got a handle on it yet.

That really bothered me, too. That line in the beginning was so dismissive, so callous, and I think even a man as calculating as Xavier had to be would never be so unfeeling of Scott, his chief (and second-longest) pupil.

I had SO many problems with X3, though, I wish I could get hold of the script-writers and SHAKE them. One actual quote I've seen ran something like "well, this is the last one, so we may as well kill whomever we like!" *headdesk*

I've heard rumors that they're trying to coax Bryan Singer back to do a fourth X-men film and I hope it's true. I think he'd figure out a way to bring Scott back without being too implausible. (The one hope I cling to: you never actually SEE Scott die in X3, so...there's hope!)

I know what you mean about shaking the script writers. I do think that flawed movies can have a lot of potential for fanfic, because it can fix the flaws. But when it's as problematic as X3, I don't know if it's fixible.

I think bringing Scott back is definitely doable, though.
