Potentially, yes. I agree with tathren that it's not only the act of writing/reading fanfic that may be subversive of consumer culture, but also the topics being written about.

BTW, I also agree that tathren's point about subverting the dominant reading, potentially along with the author is important to consider in a question of "is slash subversive". And as he notes, this type of subversion specifically links slash to a long history of queer (sub)texts.
