That's a great start for a list of kinds of realism. And I think some matter more to certain individuals than others. In some cases, as you say, one can work against the others.

Take "consistency with the ambience of canon" for example. In X-Men, I *hate* it when the people in fanfic sound like comic book characters :-) but it's certainly consistent with canon when they do. Part of why I prefer fanfic to comics is that the characters can be more fully realized and sound more like real life people and less unidimensional than comic book superheroes. OTOH, if someone writes a version of the character that doesn't incorporate his bedrock canonical characteristics (like a Cyclops who not only goes against the rules and what's expected of him but has no compunctions about doing so) it doesn't feel at all real to me.

Anyway, I think you should write an essay based on that beginning of a deconstruction. I also think it could lead to a handy checklist for writers...

heh, thanks for the encouragement, I guess now I have to write it!

Yes, that was exactly what I meant!

OT: I'm not sure if it's rude of me to say that, but in the fic extract you posted below, I don't think the word "copain" is used appropriately. "Mon pote" would be a more proper equivalent to "mate" used as an interjection. I've never seen "copain" used like that.

It's not rude, but I think it's wrong :-). Are you French? Jean-Paul is Quebecois and when I lived in Quebec that was how copain was used - to mean "pal" in American colloquial talk or "mate" in English English. I believe it still is. In the comics he calls everybody "mon ami" but - at least in Montreal - that would not be used for anyone but a very, very close friend or a lover. Copain was the term of choice in those circs (What's it used for in France?) But I'll be in Paris in a few weeks, so maybe I should switch gears and take to using "mon pote".

Ha! Quebecois! That makes sense, sorry for speaking out of turn ^^

"Copain" is also used in French for not very intimate friends, it's just not used to address to them. I can also have he meaning of boyfriend, in certain context ^^

Oh, you're coming over? Hope you enjoy the trip! I hope youll still get this (uncanny and freaky) warm weather we're having right now ^^

Not speaking out of turn at all! I'm glad of the input.

I would love freakily warm weather while we're there, but I'm sure I'll have a great time regardless. My lover and elder daughter are the Old France Hands :-) but it's the first trip to France for my younger daughter Zara (in the icon) and me. And for Zara it's her first time out of North America, so particularly exciting!

Actually she was Indian :-)! Naturalized, presumably. That picture was taken a looooonnnnnngggg time ago at the Delhi Zoo. We were there at closing time and my spouse was trying to get a picture of the baby orangutan as they moved her to the night cage. Her keeper asked if we'd like to have a picture of me with her. I stood next to her and held her hand, but then she put her arms up asking to be picked up - just like a human baby!

I wrote a story once about a mutant baby orangutan. Of course the mutant powers stuff was fantasy, but the part where Logan holds the animal was 100% BTDT Write What You Know.

And here's a capybara - I've never held one but I have petted one...
