Ironically, I got one wrong too, but apparently that only makes me smarter than 94% of the population, not 99. It would appear only smart people are taking the test now.... I do wish I knew which one I got wrong. Maybe gold isn't ag?

I'd say it's not simply a test of "common sense." knowing spelling, for example, is more a matter of training than reason, and figuring out which capital is on the Pacific Ocean requires a certain knowledge of geography.

Blast. Well, that was the only one I guessed on. Guessing isn't good for me as a strategy, clearly. Then what's aluminum? *considers looking up Ag, then decides she better get dressed and start cleaning again.*

Aluminum is Al. Ag is silver.

On a mostly unrelated point, do you know the Tom Lehrer song on the elements? It's just the names of them all to the tune of "I Am the Very Model of a Model Major General". It starts "There antimony, arsenic, aluminum, selenium and hydrogen and oxygen and nitrogen and rhenium" and at the end after the list he sings "These are the only ones of which the news has come to Harvard, and there may be many others but they haven't been discovered."

Maybe as the thing spread more non USAmericans took it? Some of the questions would be nonobvious to much of the world.

I remember Au from "Au + H2O = H2S", but why *that* is taking space in my brain I don't know, since I wasn't born until two years after the 1964 election.

I remember the 1964 election, but I don't get it. I mean I understand that the Au + H20 part is supposed to be Goldwater, but I don't know what H2S is. Hydrogen sulfide? What's the connection?

What I remember most about that election was billboards with Goldwater's slogan ("In your heart you know he's right") defaced to add "extreme" before the last word.

H2S

It stinks. Unless I'm completely confused, which is very possible.

Ah, thanks. And of course now that I'm thinking about Au being gold and AU being a fanfic thing I think there should be an archive for just AU fiction that uses a pun about that. Golden whatchamacallit or Midas something or whatever.
