I think, really, all we can do about our families is to remember the good things, and learn how to do better from their mistakes and failings. To reverse Mark Antony, the good they did lives after them, and we try to inter the evil with their bones.

What a great line! I might have to steal it {g}. Well, I suppose it's not stealing if I preface it by saying, "As my friend Dana says..."

I've been thinking a lot about this sad situation, and how ironic it is that someone who practiced as a psychiatrist couldn't tolerate human variation. And, if his objection was religious in nature, how ironic it is that he raised a daughter who was not just proud to be culturally Jewish, but for whom Jewish prayer, spirituality, and synagogue life are a vital part of her life and the way she raises her kids.

My parents weren't religious.

Timing was part of the issue. When I came out to my parents, my father said that his practice would be ruined if it were known that he had a lesbian daughter. Within a few years I think it was likely his practice would have been ruined if it were known that he disowned a daughter for being a lesbian!

Well, I guess that's one thing to be said for rushed, impersonal HMO medical practice--nowadays we're so happy to get in to see a doctor at all that "gosh, I sure hope I approve of the lifestyle of Dr. X's entire family" doesn't really come into it.
