Gacked from everybody and her sister. I hate iTunes but I do have an mp3 player so I'm doing this one minus the iTunes references.

I have randomly chosen 20 songs I carry with me. I'm posting the first line, you guess the title and artist. If the title is included in the line, I've elided it. If there are covers and they're the same text wise, I'll count both the original and the cover artist.

As people get them right, I'll edit to indicate that. Come on, give it a try.

1. Looking out on the morning rain, I used to feel uninspired
Natural Woman. I have the Carole King version. ww1614 got it.

2. Kiss me mother, kiss your darling
I Am Weary (Let Me Rest) by the Cox Family, from the movie O Brother Where Art Thou, guessed by were_lemur

3. Uh huh uh huh uh huh well fine, it's not like it's even worth the time

4. Put a windmill on a cliff where the breeze is always stiff

5. It's been a long time now I'm coming back home
Wait by The Beatles, thanks to executrix

6. Hey pretty baby are you ready for me it's your good rockin' daddy down from Tennessee

7. [song title] dreaming badly feeling something's wrong

8. I often take these night shift walks when the foreman's not around

9. [song title] she skips the potatoes

10. He's a real [song title] sitting in his nowhere land making all his nowhere plans for nobody
Nowhere Man by the Beatles ww1614 got it

11. I used to know a pretty girl who cut off all her hair

12. [song title] under my feet, I feel the sky tumbling down

I Hear the Earth Move by Carole King, guessed by skyline3way

13. [song title x3] won't you dance with me?

14. I heard the front door closing softly as I wakened from my sleep

15. In Fort Worth all the neon's burning bright

16. [song title] you only give me your funny paper
You Never Give Me Your Money by the Beatles, ww1614

17. If it came to pass that they should ask what could I tell them?

18. All my life's a [song title] sunrise and sundown
Circle by Harry Chapin, guessed by talktooloose

19. Hello honey it's me what did you think when you heard me back on the radio?

20. They say everything can be replaced
I Shall Be Released, a Dylan song that has been recorded by a bunch of folks, including The Band, as remembered by Elyse, who doesn't have an lj account

Some of those are hard! I really did just let the software choose them randomly.

Very good! I have the Carole King Natural Woman recording, but no way you could know that and any one counts.

Wow, you (or your MP3 player) really likes The Beatles!

#5 is "Wait" (Wait till I come back to your side/We'll forget the tears we cried).

Very good. I do love the Beatles (always have) and have a few albums on my mp3 player. But they seem over-represented in this list relative to what's on there.

My MP3 player says it's just called "Circle" but yes.

Did you get my email?

I just checked my work email (I'm home now) and found it there. Thanks. Just because you feel guilty is no reason your kids should make you clean up after them, but I know that's easier said than done.

Thanks. I look forward to reading your comments, though I'm dubious about whether it can be cut in two... hmm. I can always do 18a and 18b a few days apart, I suppose.

LOL! That was sort of shorthand. It's more that in an ordinary evening I'd be there to help with a lot of stuff, including clean up and since I'm not there, it kind of gets out of hand and I feel I have to allow for that somewhat. Of course they need to clean up, but they also need to make dinner, do homework, and all of their regular evening routine that other than every other Wednesday night I do with them.

I really do think the chapter has a natural breaking place. But I'm just a beta. I give my opinion and of course you decide.

You could well be right. Chapters feel like single arcs to me and bisecting them is often a disturbing thought. The irrational reason is also that I've decided the book is 30 chapters and I seem to be under the strange misapprehension that if it becomes 31 now, it will take longer.

I have a cold; maybe my brains are clouded. Argghhh, I know the Met has no free night. I researched it after I wrote it and I was so annoyed, I didn't change it yet. I use the metaphor based on the inaccuracy all through the next paragraph. *sigh*.

Hmm, "scuddering clouds" shows up all over the place in a google search for the phrase, but a definition search yields no results. It's a mass delusion. "Scudding" seems to be the real word, but the profusion of "scudderings" bears more examination.

Great beta comments, thanks. I have to think carefully about the misspellings in the chat room. It bugs you (and me) because we're editors but it's also true.

On the Met - maybe it will have a free night in the not-so-distant future.

I think if you put in enough chat speak it will look authentic even without typos.

No account necessary and glad to see you here! That's a good recording - The Band one. I happen to have it on the Joan Baez Does Dylan (and I hear she did) album. But certainly you get full marks!

Darn. Saw this too late to be first for any ones I recognized. The #9 reminds me of Anne and Kate McGarrigle's song, but I never think of its title -- just "I eat breakfast at the kitchen table".

There are some obscure ones left, but there's still a Beatles one and an Elton John unclaimed.

::yawn:: Kendra and her friends are out at Rocky Horror. I decided she is old enough to do this, but I fear I'm too old for the waiting up part.

Those would likely be obscure to me -- especially Elton John.

My sympathies on the staying up thing. S and I were a great tag team for Marty at such times, because she got up around 6 and I stayed up till... whenever. He hadn't a chance of sneaking in unless he timed it very carefully -- and then we'd know he hadn't made it back before 2:30 or 3 a.m....

Well, with a midnight movie no way you can arrive before 3:30 or so. But they're home now.

2: I am Weary (Let Me Rest). On the O Brother soundtrack, it's listed as the Cox Family, but I think they're all covers?

Probably. I didn't know all of them before the movie, but I think they were all really music from the era. Pretty song, anyway.
